Newspaper newsroom workflow is still print-centric, apart from a very few exceptions. The problem is that their workflows aren’t fit for modern purpose. However, newspapers code their workflows into their CMSes. You can build a robust, advanced content management system without making the tools to create content so piggishly ugly, bewilderingly confusing and user surly. Creating content on tools like Tumblr is like falling off a bike instead of trying to write caligraphy with a telephone pole. That’s why you have journalism outfits setting up blogs on Tumblr. Most newspaper CMSes are more WordPerfect from the 1980s than WordPress. It was like trying to create a web story with movable type, and I’m not talking about the blogging platform. The politics of print versus the web played out even in the tools we used to create content. Furthermore, there was an internal conflict over whether to use the web tools or the print tools to create content, and in the end, the print tools won out. However, I’m being diplomatic in the extreme when I say that the new CMS lacked the ease of content creation and publishing that I had grown accustomed to with Movable Type and WordPress. However, due to the scaling problems with Movable Type, The Guardian moved its blogging onto its main content management system. It was so much easier than anything I had ever used, especially when coupled with easy to use production tools such as Ecto and MarsEdit. However, Movable Type and other blogging platforms also make it ridiculously easy easy to create content – rich, heavily linked multimedia content. Movable Type had scaling issues, as did almost every blogging platform back in 2006 when I started at The Guardian. ![]() For two years when I was at The Guardian, most of my work was on our blogging platform, Movable Type. Workflow and how that is coded into the CMS is a huge issue for newspapers. New York Times editor Patrick LaForge said: However, one issue in this debate focused on the workflow and content management systems. It covers a lot of well worn territory in this debate, and I’m not going to rehash it. Mathew Ingram of GigaOm and Alex Byers, a web producer for Politico in Washington, both collected the conversation using Storify. There was an interesting discussion about linking and journalism amongst a number of journalists in North America.

Yost said relationships between trainers and chimpanzees are based on “affection training,” a method that emphasizes love, patience and consistency. AAA has no record in California of USDA violations. Yost started in television as a trainer for “Marlin Perkin’s Mutual of Omaha.” He has operated facilities in Florida and Arizona and started AAA two years ago. An inquiry would most likely occur first where a veterinary medical officer would visit the site to make a determination.” However, just because someone issues a complaint, does not mean an investigation would proceed. USDA, the federal agency that licenses and monitors exotic animal facilities, spokesperson Darby Holladay said, “We rely on the public to alert us to potential violations. Owner and director of AAA, Sid Yost, said her claims are absolutely not true, and that “this is just one of those animal activists things in our business we have to deal with.”Īs serious as Baeckler’s claims are, there is no video, audiotape or witnesses to support them. Sometimes they are beaten without any provocation or for things that are completely out of their control.” “If they don’t pay attention, they are beaten. “If they bite someone, they are beaten,” she claimed. In a telephone interview, Baeckler said the Collaboratory was “acting on an overall sense that chimpanzees were being treated violently, though not specifically at Amazing Animal Actors.”īaeckler alleges that trainers at AAA hit the chimpanzees to discipline them. A story subsequently appeared in Time magazine. ![]() She delivered a five-page testimony at an October press conference, kicking off the alliance’s campaign to stop the use of chimpanzees in entertainment. Who holds a master’s degree in primatology, claims to have spent 14 months and 1,000 hours as a volunteer trainer documenting the alleged abuses. Researcher Sarah Baeckler was hired to investigate Amazing Animal Actors (AAA), located near the border of Ventura County, by the Chimpanzee Collaboratory, an alliance of eight primate welfare and conservation groups. ![]() Recent allegations of abuse at a Malibu compound that trains chimpanzees for the entertainment industry has the owner saying the claims “are the most ridiculous thing.” Owner says charges are “ridiculous.” Other than one person’s testimony, no concrete proof of allegations is given. There’s a lot more that goes into evaluating whether a rental property is worth investing in than this calculation, but this equation gives us good insight into the cash flows of the properties. You might assume it’s a better investment than the first, but there are other things we need to consider. Thus, the second building actually has a higher NOI than the first option. Here’s how she would calculate it.Īs you can see, the first apartment generates more gross revenues during the year, but it also has more expenses than the second building. Marcia uses the NOI equation to evaluate if either or these buildings is worth purchasing and judge which apartment complex is a better investment. ![]() Today she is evaluating two small apartment buildings that show the following items on their annual income statement. She is constantly looking for new real estate to invest in that she can either improve or run more efficiently than the current owners. Marcia owns a real estate business that purchases existing rental properties and potential rental properties. Keep in mind that there are several different expenses that are not included in this category like income taxes and interest expense.Īs you can see, the net operating income equation is pretty simple, so let’s take a look at a real estate example. In other words, these are all the expenses required to maintain the property and run the rental business. The operating expenses in the NOI formula consist of all necessary expenses associated with the revenue generating activities. Here are the most common examples of revenue sources: This includes all revenues from a piece of real estate. The net operating income formula is calculated by subtracting operating expenses from total revenues of a property.Īs I mentioned earlier, revenues include more than just rental income. Let’s take a look at how to calculate net operating income. ![]() Other industries refer to this calculation as EBIT or earnings before interest and taxes and use it to base investment decisions on as well. This concept isn’t exclusive to real estate. All of these activities contribute to the cash flows of the property and necessary expenses. For example, a rental property can generate cash from renting apartments, charging parking fees, servicing vending machines, or operating laundry machining. Since there are many different ways a piece of property can generate income, investors and creditors need to include all revenues in their evaluation. For example, they look at how much money the property can generate after all of the operating expenses have been paid in order to decide how valuable it is and what price they are willing to pay for it. They also use this ratio to formulate an initial value of the property. Real estate investors and creditors use this calculation to evaluate the cash flows of a specific property and determine whether it is a good investment or creditworthy. In other words, it measures the amount of cash flows that a property has after all necessary expenses have been paid. ![]() ![]() Net operating income is a profitability formula that is often used in real estate to measure a commercial property’s profit potential and financial health by calculating the income after operating expenses are deducted. Their influence on British comedy has been apparent for years, while in North America, it has coloured the work of cult performers from the early editions of Saturday Night Live through to more recent absurdist trends in television comedy. Following their television work, they began making films, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975), Life of Brian (1979) and The Meaning of Life (1983). A self-contained comedy team responsible for both writing and performing their work, the Pythons had creative control which allowed them to experiment with form and content, discarding rules of television comedy. Loosely structured as a sketch show, but with an innovative stream-of-consciousness approach aided by Gilliam's animation, it pushed the boundaries of what was acceptable in style and content. īroadcast by the BBC between 19, Monty Python's Flying Circus was conceived, written and performed by its members Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin. Plus, one random player on each team is given an MVP SPP bonus at the end of each game. Your Blitz will usually be the most important move you make each turn.Įach player earns SPP (Star Player Points) when they cause an injury, complete a pass, intercept a pass, or score a touchdown. The player can move before and/or after hitting. ![]() Pass and Hand-off are fairly self-explanatory, but the Blitz lets one player both move and hit in the same turn. Shared amongst your whole team, you also get three “special” actions a turn – Blitz, Pass, and Hand-off. So you generally want to perform actions that are absolutely safe first (like standing guys up from the ground or moving guys that won’t have to dodge away from opponents), then move on to the least risky or most important actions and prioritize from there.Įach player can typically either move or punch on a turn, but not both. Nothing’s stopping you from trying the other teams first, but Blood Bowl has quite a bit to take in at first and many of the other teams rely more on techniques that require better knowledge of the game mechanics to shine.īlood Bowl is essentially a game of risk management – you can potentially perform an action with each of your players each turn, but if you have one of your guys fail an attempt to pick up the ball, lose possession of the ball, get called on a foul, leave the field, or get knocked over, you lose the rest of your turn (there is an exception for the “get knocked over” rule if the skill Wrestle is being used). Orcs and maybe Humans are widely considered the easiest teams to start out with. Play a bunch of comp stomps until you feel confident, then you can consider fighting other players. You’re going to lose but hopefully you’ll figure out why as you go. Elves on the other hand can go right through that dotted line as though it wasn’t even there. A dotted line will stop the orks guaranteed, although some of your players may get pushed or knocked out. Elves pass the ball and dodge like crazy so they ignore tackle zones. Orks form a big donut and walk the ball in, and then beat up the other team. Learn the strengths and weaknesses and play-styles of the factions and pick yours carefully based on what you think is fun to do. Rolling the unhappy dice is pretty much guaranteed to screw you over. If you can only roll a single die, that’s dangerous, and make sure you at least have a re-roll ready, or otherwise don’t do it. You generally want situations where you roll the two happy dice and pick one. Get some re-rolls and only do risky rolls when you have them. ![]() But potentially prioritize key plays as well in case something else that’s fairly likely ends up being a turnover anyways. Learn the rules as far as what gets rolled when, do your turn in order from safest to least safe activity (which is kinda awkward to get used to) since if there’s a turnover, that ends your turn there. Its like chess, once you take your hand off a figure, its stuck. ![]() Each unit can only act once, so if you move somebody and then move somebody else and then you decide you want to blitz and have the first guy tackle, too late, can’t be done.A lot of the basic stuff is fairly common sense, but there’s a bunch of traps. I’d honestly suggest looking up some guides or videos on it if you’ve never played Blood Bowl before in general.Rerolls are a godsend, and if I recall they’re discounted during team creation.Since they are also increasing your team value, sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and get rid of a guy and hire a replacement. Don’t be afraid to release some guys if they get crippled up to the point that they’re no longer useful.Having money counts against your team value, and your team value determines what you face.If you have any tips feel free to share with us!
